"this is the closest"

Kunga Choephel approached me for this project knowing that he needed a score, but not sure how to implement it in such a lo-fi camcorder medium this documentary about his return to a hometown he hasn't seen since childhood, and how the time sacrificed from immigrating changed his family in his absence.
He brought up the idea that he needed the score to blend in, to feel like it exists in the spaces that are being filmed. Each score took careful planning, and it involved finding what instruments were appropriate for each location, what the reverb would sound like in that space.
One score was mastered to sound like it was a child playing on an old, unused piano in the background.
Overall, the score became an integrated, natural, and almost unnoticed conversation taking place in each scene, which was Kunga's intention.
This documentary was nominated and screened at Dharamshala International Film Festival, and Tide Film Festival in Brooklyn.
